T-Stats Expertise to Develop European Tourism Database

Acorn’s expertise in developing online statistics databases for destinations in the UK, across Europe, and beyond is being utilised by the European Union as part of a study looking into the feasibility of an online tourism statistics database for EU countries.

Working alongside the UK’s Office for National Statistics, Acorn will design and develop what has been called a Virtual Tourism Observatory to serve as a central storage point for tourism statistics and documents relating to the tourism sector for all EU member states.

The Virtual Tourism Observatory will be accessible to anyone with a connection to the Internet and with an authorised password, and it will provide statistics covering inbound visits, expenditure, domestic trips, tourism satellite account tables, and employment data amongst others. It will also be a repository for documents, which can be searched and sorted using interactive tools.

Director of Acorn T-Stats, Kevin Millington, comments: “We are delighted to be working for the European Union on this high-profile project. It will enable us to draw on our experiences setting up online tourism statistics databases for destinations across the UK. There is increasing interest in using online technology to collect and share information in a useful and user-friendly way, and that’s what T-Stats is all about. For too long, decisions in the tourism sector have been made on evidence that has been flimsy at best.”
